What makes us unique?

Unlike many organisations, IAM RoadSmart has road safety as its sole focus. Providing driver training and risk management for businesses is just one core element of what we do.

Policy, research and consultancy

We inform and influence to ensure that road safety remains a policy and investment priority. Our Policy and Research team produce documents on topics key to the conversation, such as:

Drink-driving

Speed cameras

Motorway speed limits

Vehicle technology

Tax and legislation

Motorcycling and mature drivers

As a leading road safety charity, we are frequently called upon by major media agencies to provide expert commentary and analysis on road safety issues that hit the headlines.

We often give evidence to governmental bodies, including the Transport Select Committee, and provide expert input and analysis on key committees at Highways England, Road Safety Scotland, Transport Focus and PACTS (Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety). We also contribute to the international road safety debate as members of the Mobility division of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

Improving driver behaviour since 1956

Our road safety charity started life in 1956 as the Institute of Advanced Motorists, with the aim of promoting safer, more enjoyable driving by raising drivers’ skill levels. Since then we have helped half a million motorists to achieve the Advanced Driver standard and established ourselves as the UK’s leading independent road safety charity.

Today, we have over 75,000 members, all advocates of improving driving and riding skills. Nationwide, they make up approximately 170 affiliated advanced motoring groups, run by volunteers who are passionate about passing on their advanced driving knowledge and experience. They offer coaching sessions and free-to-attend skills events and proactively engage with schools and the emergency services to support a wide range of road safety initiatives in their local communities.

Driver Retraining Academy

IAM RoadSmart is the UK’s largest provider of DVSA-approved drink-driver rehabilitation courses, with the courts referring over 10,000 convicted drink-drivers to us each year.

We are also a licenced provider of the full range of courses available under the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS) including speed awareness.
