The new Highway Code – what is the ‘Dutch Reach’?

By 22nd February 2022No Comments

Many of the new rules in the Highway Code stem from the Hierarchy of Road Users: a set of principles that establish a priority system designed to improve the safety of the most vulnerable road users.

The ‘Dutch Reach’ aims to protect cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians from a very common danger. When drivers, or passengers, open their door without proper observation, the result could be serious injury to one of these vulnerable road users.
